Born in Essex, Bawden attended Cambridge School of Art from to , and later the Royal College of Art from , where his diploma was in book illustration. Here, inspired by Paul Nash, he was introduced to the Curwen Press, and produced posters for the London Underground. The plates and re-printed pattern papers are printed at the Senecio Press. copies are quarter-bound in buckram and Curwen pattern paper, and 85 copies quarter-bound in leather with five additional full sheets of pattern paper.
